Dane County

...We Americans have forgotten founder Thomas Paine's warning that 'Government, even in its best state, is but a necessary evil; in its worst state, an intolerable one.'" --George Mason University economics professor Walter E. Williams

We are pleased to cosponsor and host a Meet and Greet for members of the conservative/moderate coalition running for the Dane County Board of Supervisors (see article on the right-hand side of this webpage).

For over 20 years local government has seen a non-partisan, bi-partisan moderate-conservative movement. Its most famous leader was former Assembly Representative Lyman Anderson (R- Oregon) who served on the Dane County Board for more that two decades prior to and after his legislative term. Lyman was an Oregon-area farmer and champion of property rights as well as limited government and low taxes. In 1988, a movement started to work with a wide range of people, regardless of party, who held similar beliefs to Lyman and others in local government at the time. By 1992 the moderate conservatives won control of the Dane County Board and held or shared control for most of the next decade.

This movement continued over the years, now represented byDave Ripp, the dean of the County Board, Eileen Bruskewitz, Dave Wiganowsky and many others. There are Republicans, Democrats, and independents that participate including officeholders, candidates, and volunteers. Volunteers, who help candidates, contribute money, participate in public policy advocacy, and run for office power the Movement.

During the last 4 years Dane County politics has turned decidedly radical:
  • Taxes have gone up over the rate of inflation – this year’s increase is 7.9%, a rate not seen in many years.
  • 911 Center’s operation became controversial as failures occurred in some high profile cases.
  • Public safety has been an increasing problem in formerly safe areas of the county.
  • Massive quarter-to-half a billion-dollar slow-speed commuter train is planned supported by $30-50 million of additional taxes.
  • New regulations proposed would regulate properties within 3 football fields of a stream and 10 football fields of any lake as shoreland with special restrictions. And there is more.
This year County Board elections has 18 contested races. Moderate-conservative volunteers have been working hard to find good candidates, orient them, and support them. To improve the numbers of moderate-conservatives on the County Board, it is important that lots of people help.

We urge you to attend this rally (see the article on the right-hand side of this webpage) and get involved to turn Dane County once again into a livable area in which to live, work, own a business and raise our families without serious crimes, high taxes, irresponsible programs, and unreasonable regulations. Bring others too so that we can get the RIGHT candidates elected! To win on April 6th, GET INVOLVED!

Public Debt Bombshells

Former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher once observed, "The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people's money." One facet of that problem has arrived in the form of unfunded liabilities for public "servant" benefits. According to the Pew Center, a $1 trillion gap exists between $3.35 trillion in pension, health care and other retirement benefits promised to current and retired state employees as of fiscal year 2008 and the $2.35 trillion available to pay them. That's $1 trillion in unfunded liabilities that must be resolved through higher taxes in concert with drastic benefit reductions.

Not without irony, President Obama's adopted home state of Illinois is in the worst shape of all, managing to fund only 54 percent of those benefits while carrying an astounding unfunded liability of more than $54 billion.
Similar data from the crucibles of democracy also show a strong correlation between states with concentrations of liberals and a state's budgetary health. The five states in the worst financial shape are all bastions of leftist policies -- California, Connecticut, Illinois, New Jersey and New York. Each shares strong appetites for public sector unions and pricey social programs. Illinois, again, is in the worst financial condition, with per-capita debt of $1,877 and unfunded pensions of $17,230. Moody's rates Illinois' general obligation just ahead of dead-last California. On the other side of the equation, three of the top five fiscally healthiest states are conservative states (Utah, Nebraska and Texas), while the other two (New Hampshire and Virginia) are swing states.

Considering the unchecked acceleration of the federal government's looming fiscal Armageddon, voters must ask themselves this November if they wish to call the tune and deal with the issue before debt becomes uncontrollable. Allowing this current crop of suicidal spenders two additional years is an unacceptable alternative.

*NEW* Associate Membership

NEW FOR 2010

Our Club is offering RWDC Associate Memberships for just $10 per person per year. They are not meant to take the place of regular membership since individuals will NOT be members of either the state or national federations. Rather, the purpose of these memberships are so that spouses and other family members, friends, coworkers, other Republicans and businesses that support our local efforts can help us financially. With rising expenses to operate, this program will subsidize us so that we will not be forced to increase our dues. These funds will be used for development and improving programs.
