DISCURSO DEL PRESIDENTE A LA NACIÓN

Ronald Reagan dijo que "En Estados Unidos, nuestro origen importa menos que nuestro destino". En esa frase, resumió dos siglos de pensamiento político revolucionario. ¿Qué otra nación fue fundada por inmigrantes? ¿Qué otra nación consagró la igualdad de derechos y la convirtió en ley? ¿Qué otra nación tuvo en el núcleo mismo de su ser la convicción de que son las acciones las que definen a una persona, no su raza?

La visión que el Presidente Reagan tenía de Estados Unidos fue una de las razones por las cuales me hice republicano. Vine a este país proveniente de la Cuba comunista. Vi lo que significaba perder la libertad de religión y de expresión, ver que un gobierno opresivo se adueñe de todos los aspectos de tu vida. Sé cuán importantes son las libertades, porque he visto cómo es la vida sin ellas. El Presidente Reagan lo comprendía también. Comprendía el poder de la libertad y luchó por ella dentro y fuera de su país. Confrontó al régimen comunista en la Rusia soviética y todas sus naciones satélite, incluyendo Cuba. Redujo los impuestos y los reglamentos gubernamentales, apartando a la burocracia del camino del pueblo estadounidense, el pueblo más trabajador e innovador del mundo. La visión que Ronald Reagan tenía de Estados Unidos era la visión del Sueño Americano, la convicción de que con libertad y trabajo arduo, todo es posible.

En ese entonces creía en esa visión y hoy sigo creyendo en ella. Es por eso que me enorgullece ser el Presidente General del Partido Republicano. Creo que mi partido todavía es el partido del optimismo y con la visión de un futuro brillante.

Y en los próximos dos años, mi meta es llevar el mensaje republicano de esperanza a todos los estadounidenses, en cada vecindario, en cada ciudad, en cada estado.

Voy a llevar nuestro mensaje a la comunidad latina, a la comunidad afro americana y a todas las comunidades que tal vez pensaban que no tenían nada en común con los ideales republicanos. Quiero que todos los estadounidenses comprendan que si les importa la educación de sus hijos, si les importa tener casa propia, si quieren poner un pequeño negocio o ampliarlo para que sea una empresa más grande, entonces somos el partido para ellos. Si les importa la fortaleza de la familia, el poder de la fe y las comunidades, entonces somos el partido para ellos. Si les importan los valores tradicionales del trabajo arduo y la responsabilidad individual, que un partido busque reducir el gobierno, pero procure aumentar la libertad individual, entonces somos el partido para ellos y para su Sueño Americano.

Quiero que mi partido crezca y quiero ayudarlo a crecer hablando de nuestros principios y nuestra visión de un futuro brillante. Sé de qué modo esos principios me inspiraron y me cambiaron la vida. Sé que la lucha contra la tiranía, la convicción en el poder de la fe, la ferviente dedicación al Sueño Americano no sólo me hicieron republicano, sino alguien que se dedicó de lleno a luchar por esos ideales. Y sé que hablar de esos principios no sólo hará que mi partido se fortalezca, sino que también hará que nuestra nación se fortalezca.

En 1854, Abraham Lincoln, quien se convertiría en nuestro primer Presidente republicano, dijo: "Es maravilloso el poder de la esperanza sobre el esfuerzo humano y la felicidad". Hoy, 150 años más tarde, el partido de Abraham Lincoln todavía es el partido de la esperanza, el partido del optimismo, el partido con la visión de un brillante futuro. Estoy orgulloso de ser republicano y estoy orgulloso de tener la oportunidad en los próximos dos años de llevar el mensaje de esperanza de mi partido a todos los estadounidenses.

Ronald Reagan once said "In America, our origins matter less than our destination." In that one sentence, he summed up two centuries of revolutionary political thought. What other nation was founded by immigrants? What other nation enshrined equal rights for all into law? What other nation had at the very center of its being the credo that your actions define who you are, not your ethnicity?

President Reagan’s vision of America was one of the reasons I became a Republican. I came to this country from Communist Cuba. I saw what it was like to lose your freedom of religion and of speech, to see an oppressive government lay claim to every aspect of your life. I know how important our freedoms are, because I’ve seen life without them. President Reagan understood that as well. He understood the power of freedom, and he fought for it both at home and abroad. He confronted the communist regime in Soviet Russia and all of its satellite nations, including Cuba. He reduced taxes and government regulations, getting bureaucracy out of the way of the American people, the most industrious, innovative people in the world. Ronald Reagan’s vision of America was a vision of the American Dream, that belief that with freedom and hard work, anything is possible.

That was a vision I believed in then, and it is a vision I still believe in today. It is why I am proud to be General Chairman of the Republican Party. I believe my Party is still the party of optimism and a vision for a bright future.

And over the next two years, my goal is to bring the Republican message of hope to every American, in every neighborhood in every city in every state.

I am going to take our message to the Hispanic community, to the African-American community, and to all communities that may never have believed that Republican ideals spoke to them. I want all Americans to understand that if they care about education for their children, if they care about owning their own home, about beginning a small business and growing it into a large business, then we are the party for them. If they care about strong families, about the power of faith and communities, then we are the party for them. If they care about the traditional values of hard work and individual responsibility, about a Party that stands for less government but more individual freedom, then we are the party for them and their American Dream.

I want my Party to grow, and I want to help it do that by talking about our principles and our vision of a bright future. I know how those principles have reached out to me and changed my life. I know how the fight against tyranny, how belief in the power of faith, how a fierce dedication to the American Dream made me not just a Republican, but someone who dedicated himself to fighting for those ideals. And I know that talking about those principles will not just make my party stronger – it will make our nation stronger.

In 1854, Abraham Lincoln – the man who would go on to become our first Republican President – said "The power of hope upon human exertion and happiness is wonderful." Today, more than 150 years later, Abraham Lincoln’s party is still the party of hope, the party of optimism, and the party of a bright future. I am proud to be a Republican, and I am proud to have the opportunity over the next two years to bring my party’s message of hope to every American.
